"The Hangman" is a poem by Maurice Ogden written in 1951. Its plot concerns a hangman who arrives at a town and executes the citizens one by one. As each citizen is executed, the others are afraid to object out of fear that they will be next. Finally there is nobody remaining in the town except the Hangman and the narrator of the poem.

Les Goldman and Paul Julian directed an animated adaptation of Maurice Ogden’s anti-fascist poem in 1964 and it is narrated by Herschel Bernardi. The film was co-winner of the Silver Sail Award at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1964.

Designed to evoke classic Soviet propoganda, the film vividly illustrates the poem’s theme of creeping fear and social decay invoked by abuses of the State.

René Laloux (July 13, 1929–March 14, 2004) was a French animator and film director.
He was born in Paris in 1929 and went to art school to study painting. After some time working in advertising, he got a job in a psychiatric institution where he began experimenting in animation with the interns. It is at the psychiatric institution that he made 1960's Monkey's Teeth (Les Dents du Singe), in collaboration with Paul Grimault's studio, and using a script written by the Cour Cheverny's interns.

Another important collaborator of his was Roland Topor with whom Laloux made Dead Time (Les Temps Morts, 1964), The Snails (Les Escargots, 1965) and his most famous work, the feature length Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage, 1973).

Laloux also worked with Jean Giraud (Mœbius) to create the lesser known film Les Maîtres du temps (Time Masters) in 1981. Laloux's 1988 film, Gandahar, was released in the US as Light Years. The US version was redubbed by Harvey Weinstein, from a screenplay adapted by Isaac Asimov. The US version was not as successful as the French version, grossing less than $400,000 on its release.[1]

Laloux died of a heart attack on March 14, 2004 in Angoulême, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France.

The English translation, “barking island,” fails to capture the meaning of the original French, literally “dog of history.”

Synopsis: Constantinople, 1910. Too many stray dogs in the city streets. The newly established government, influenced by the model of Western society, tries to find out from European experts how to get rid of them before deciding, alone, to deport thirty thousand dogs to a deserted island off the coast of the city.

Nolan was studying English Literature at University College London when he started to make 16mm films at the college film society, of which the surreal short DOODLEBUG was one. This early film shows the preoccupation with narrative boundaries Nolan would later explore in his feature films and has the simplicity common to many good shorts. The film was produced by his now-wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas.

1988 - "Wolność nogi / Freedom of the Leg". A dream-like story of a sleeping man whose body parts live their own lives at night to return to him in the morning - all except one leg which has chosen freedom. Its owner as well as a crowd of homeless men chase the leg, but it grows feathers and flies away as a bird. A grotesque tale with a poetic ending and with interesting music by Janusz Hajdun.

Piotr Dumala was born in Poland and studied sculpture and animation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His award-winning animated ?lms include Lagodna (Gentle Spirit, 1985), Nerwowe zycie kosmosu (Nervous Life of the Universe, 1986), Sciany (Walls, 1987), Wolnosc nogi (Freedom of the Leg, 1988), and Franz Kafka (1990).

Dumala's films have won multiple awards. Lagodna was winner of the Golden Ducat at the International Film Festival in Mannheim, Germany, in 1985, and received an award for the Best Animated Film at the International Short Film Festival in Toures, France. Dumala received a Mister Linea Award at the Treviso International Animation Festival for his 24 episodes of the series Nerwowe zycie, and, in 1998, Sciany received the Grand Prix at the International Short Film Festival in Krakow, Poland, and Special Jury Award at the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France. In 1992, Franz Kafka received the Grand Prix at the 10th International Animation Film Festival in Zagreb, Best Animated Film at the International Film Festival in Madrid, Grand Prix at the International Animated Film Festival in Espinho, and Best Cartoon Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.

Dumala's most recent piece is an adaptation of Dostoyevski's Crime and Punishment (Zbrodnia i kara) which premiered at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in September 2000 and received the prize for Best Design at that festival. In 2001, Crime and Punishment was awarded the Public Prize at the Summer Film Festival in Kazimierz, Poland, and at the International Animation Film Festival in Espinho. In 2003 Dumala was awarded a Luna de Valencia at the Valencia Film Festival for his lifetime achievement in animation. He received the Albin Brunovski Prize in Uherske Hradiste for his artistic creativity in the art of animation, and a Grande FeFe Award at the FeFe Festival in Warsaw for his artistic independence in the field of animation. Dumala has created four MTV idents: Charlatan won the Broadcast Design Gold Award in Orlando, Florida, in 1994, and was a finalist in the New York festivals. Kafka Meets Dostoyevski received an International Broadcast Design Gold Award in 1996.

In addition, Dumala has made commercials and TV trailers; a short public service announcement for Amnesty International; and a ten-second sequence created for the Absolut Vodka website showcasing independent animation. He teaches animation at the Film, Television and Drama School in Lodz, Poland; is a guest professor at the Animation House at Konstfack in Eksjö, Sweden; and a visiting lecturer at Harvard University. He is involved in writing and journalistic activities, and published Razor Game (Male, 2000), a collection of short stories. He also creates graphics, paintings, illustrations and poster designs. He is currently working on his new film The Forest.

Awards: 1989 - Grand Prix at 1st Animated Film Biennial FAZY'89 in Bielsko-Biała; Brązowy Lajkonik at 19th National Short Film Festival in Cracow; Professional Prize at the Kiev KROK Festival; 1990 - 1st Prize for a 5 to12 Minute Film at the Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films.

Michaela Pavlatova was born in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1961. In 1987 she graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. As an animation film director, her films have received numerous awards at international film festivals, including an Oscar nomination for Reci, reci, reci/Words, words, words, the Grand Prix in Montreal, and accolades at Berlin, Tampere, Hiroshima, Stuttgart and the list goes on. Her short animated film, Repete, has also won a series of awards including the Grand Prix at the International Animation Festival Hiroshima and Golden Bear in Berlin.

"Train of Thought was made as our graduation film from The Arts Institute at Bournemouth in 2008-2009. Although we used digital compositing software, all the animation and models were done by hand, not with CGI. The film took approximately 9 months to complete, from storyboards through to the final edit. It was a team effort, and we were especially lucky to work with talented modelmaking students, and a mix of professional and student actors".

Short and Sweet has teamed up with Getty Images to launch a film challenge with a twist.
Getty Images approached producer Basil Stephens and Short and Sweet founder Julia Stephenson with the idea of setting up a film competition which would make use of images in Getty's Hulton Archive. Stephenson drew from her in-depth knowledge of the short film arena to suggest a selection of talented filmmakers.
After picking out ten up-and-coming directors, she gave them the opportunity to pitch. Four of the filmmakers made it on to the shortlist and got the chance to realise their ideas. They were given three months to create their films.
The challenges aim was to highlight the breadth and depth of content available at the Hulton Archive, which offers a unique resource to filmmakers and creatives alike. But rather than set a rigid brief, the challenge offered key words and phrases as prompters to guide the filmmakers creativity. Examples of these prompters included discover our past, images that shape our future, still & moving imagery, ordinary people, ordinary things and extraordinary people, extraordinary things.

Oktapodi is a 2007 French computer-animated short film that originated as a Graduate Student Project from Gobelins L'Ecole de L'Image. The short is about a pair of love struck octopuses who through a series of comical events are separated and find each other. Oktapodi was directed by Julien Bocabeille, François-Xavier Chanioux, Olivier Delabarre, Thierry Marchand, Quentin Marmier, and Emud Mokhberi. Music was composed by Kenny Wood.

Oktapodi was well received, winning a number of awards, as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Short Film (Animated) for the 81st Academy Awards. It was also included in the Animation Show of Shows.

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrators James Braithwaite and Alex Kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short and won the 2009 Emmy for 'New Approaches' (making it the first film to win an Emmy on behalf of the internet).

Παρακολουθήστε αυτή την ταινία μικρού μήκους (12′) που γυρίστηκε το 1994 από τον Γερμανό σκηνοθέτη Pepe Danquart, με τον τίτλο «Schwarzfahrer» (Ο μαύρος επιβάτης).
Η ιστορία της ταινίας με λίγα λόγια είναι η εξής: Ένας μαύρος ανεβαίνει στο λεωφορείο και κάθεται δίπλα σε μια ηλικιωμένη κυρία. Καθ’ όλη την διάρκεια της διαδρομής, η ηλικιωμένη που δυσανασχετεί, μουρμουρίζει για να την ακούει ο μαύρος συνεπιβάτης της (χωρίς καν να τον κοιτάζει) εκφράζοντας τον ρατσισμό που έχει μέσα της. Ο μαύρος δείχνει να αδιαφορεί για τα όσα ακούει, ενώ οι άλλοι συνεπιβάτες δείχνουν να αδιαφορούν, ή να δυσανασχετούν με τον ρατσιστικό μονόλογο της ηλικιωμένης κυρίας.
Σε κάποια από τις επόμενες στάσεις μπαίνει στο λεωφορείο ένας ελεγκτής και ζητά τα εισιτήρια των επιβατών. Ο μαύρος επιβάτης βγάζει το εισιτήριό του και το κρατά στα χέρια του. Το ίδιο και η ηλικιωμένη κυρία.
Δεν θα σας πω τι συμβαίνει στη συνέχεια αλλά είναι φοβερή η αντίδραση του μαύρου...

Ένα απλό, εύστοχο, μικρής διάρκειας φιλμ που καυτηριάζει την κατάσταση που επικρατεί στη Λωρίδα της Γάζας ήταν ικανό για να προκαλέσει αντιδράσεις στο Ισραήλ. Αναφερόμαστε στην "Κλειστή Ζώνη" ένα φιλμ κινουμένων σχεδίων, που δημοσιεύτηκε μέσω internet από τον Εβραίο σκηνοθέτη-animator Yoni Godman ("Βαλς με τον Μπασίρ") για τους σκοπούς της ισραηλινής μη κερδοσκοποικής οργάνωσης Gisha (Πρόσβαση).

Μέσα στα 90 δευτερόλεπτα της διάρκειάς του, βλέπουμε τη μάταιη προσπάθεια ενός παιδιού να ακολουθήσει ένα πουλί έξω από τα στενά όρια της Γάζας, καθώς ένα χέρι με ηγετικό τρόπο υψώνεται κάθε φορά μπροστά του και του κλείνει το δρόμο.

Ο Godman ξεκίνησε τη δημιουργία του φιλμ πριν την τελευταία ισραηλινή επέμβαση στη Λωρίδα της Γάζας που άφησε πίσω της χιλιάδες νεκρούς Παλαιστίνιους. Τα θλιβερά γεγονότα όμως, επιτάχυναν τις διαδικασίες και η ανάγκη ολοκλήρωσής του, κατέστη επιτακτική.

Η παραβίαση του δικαιώματος της ελεύθερης μετακίνησης και κατ'επέκταση η στέρηση μιας σειράς βασικών δικαιωμάτων (παιδεία, τροφή, ιατρική περίθαλψη, ελευθερία της έκφρασης κ.α.) αποτελεί για τους Ισραηλινούς τη ιδανική μορφή μεταχείρισης αυτών των ανθρώπων, που θεωρούνται στο σύνολό τους μέλη της Χαμάς.

"Οι άνθρωποι δεν θέλουν να ακούν ότι οι Παλαιστίνιοι είναι πραγματικοί άνθρωποι. Προτιμούν να τους θεωρούν κάτι κακό. Ότι όλοι είναι όπως τα μέλη της Χαμάς. Είναι εύκολο να λες "ας τους τιμωρήσουμε, ας τους σκοτώσουμε όλους" και πιο δύσκολο να τους αντιμετωπίσεις σαν καθημερινούς ανθρώπους που θέλουν να ζήσουν ειρηνικά", δηλώνει χαρακτηριστικά ο Godman στην Jerusalem Post, θέτοντας το ζήτημα στη σωστή του διάσταση.

Piotr Kamler

Piotr Kamler was born in Warsaw in 1936. He is a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Art. In 1959 he went to Paris to continue his art studies. it was there that he came into contact with Research Department at ORTF( directed by Pierre Schaeffer) and began to collaborate with “concrete” musicians such as Xenakis on experimental shorts( musical abstract films and “fables”). The ORTF Research Department which was later taken over by INA, was a hothouse for talent, enabling diverse artists such as Peter Foldes, Robert Lapoujade , Jacques Espagne, Jacques Rouxel, Andre Martin and Michel Boschet, Jacques Colombat, Jean-Francois Laguionie, Henry Lacam and Kamler to carry out a large number of bold and innovative personal projects.
With astonishing regularity, Kamler came up with no less than 8 unusual short films between 1962 and 1973. The films themselves were incorrectly described as science fiction-in fact they were much closer to the universe of Borges than to Space Opera. Kamler, who created strange, improbable but plausible world, began to explore a whole range of different visual techniques. Le Trou (1968), Araignelephant (1968), Delicieuse Catastrophe(1971), Coeur de secours (1973) all won awards at major film festivals (Cracow, New York, Mamaiea , Melbourne … ). After Le Pas (Grand prix at Annecy 1975) Kamler went underground for a while until he resurfaced with the full-length feature Chronopolis (1982).

Chronopolis made in 1982 by Piotr Kamler is a fabulous city lost in space where strange pharaoh-like immortals kill the monotony of their deathless state by fabricating time, represented by enigmatic, morphing white balls.

Kamler's animated cinema suggests a singular variety of science fiction; it was he who provided the original idea for the Shadoks TV series. Completely unalike to more conventionally linear and text-based narratives, Kamler's films instead explore a series of dynamic visual motifs. Typically, the conclusion of these films is less suggestive of resolution, than it is of recurring episode. What is most striking in all his films is the variety of visual invention that Kamler brings to each work - he is as assured working with clay (as in his feature, Chronopolis) as he is with ink and paper, or even animating digitally on computer (in the most recent work in this program, Une mission ephemere). These visual flourishes embellish some of the most amazing animated films ever made - an achievement which won his Le Pas the Grand Prix of the 1975 Annecy Animation Festival.

The Cathedral (Polish: Katedra) is the title of a science fiction short story by Jacek Dukaj, winner of the Janusz A. Zajdel Award in 2000; and of a 2002 short animated movie by Tomasz Bagiński, based on the story. The film was nominated in 2002 for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film for the 75th Academy Awards. The movie won the title of Best Animated Short at Siggraph 2002 in San Antonio as well as several other awards.

The movie, made in 3ds max, focuses on a man who visits a mystical, organic building that looks like a medieval cathedral. As he walks through the immense structure, the light from his torch falls upon the pillars, revealing human faces. The viewer later realises that the faces are still alive, as several smile and open their eyes as the man walks past them. The building's nature is partially unveiled at sunrise as the blinding light enchants the visitor and causes organic branch-like structures to burst from his chest. These protrusions then become another set of pillars in the building.

The technical and artistic strengths of the film’s creators all dovetail brilliantly, making for a tightly packed narrative that’s full of detail and comedic irony.

"This story is about a young boy who falls in love with a girl who is much older than him. He wants to create a other part of him to seduce her, someone older, stronger…But, this part of him began to be independent and act without control from Gary. Emile “the other side of Gary” manage to seduce the girl but he hasn’t got the same vision of love, he’s more violent and sexual than Gary. Gary is a child with dream, Emile is just his “physic part”.

We wanted to make a story, with illustrated feelings, but not in a classic narrative way. We wanted the visuals to manage to convey even more this feelings. We wanted to have a metaphoric way of storytelling. There is a whole sequence in the inside of the giant, a kind of retrospection and a way to show that Gary has to destruct or manage a part of himself in order to grow up. We wanted to show the vision of love from his childish point of view, with magic moments, imagination…The film is a metaphore of the adolescence, the first strong feelings, the first physic desire…"

Juan Diego Solanas (born 4 November 1966) is an Argentine film director, screenwriter and cinematographer. His film Nordeste was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. He is the son of Argentina film director Fernando Solanas.

Juan Solanas estudió Historia del Arte en Paris. Además desarrolló una pasión por la fotografía. A través de numerosos comerciales y videos de música Solanas demostró su talento como director a lo largo de 15 años. Su primer trabajo es inmediatamente reconocido.

En el 2001, escribió y dirigió su primer cortometraje L´Homme Sans Tête, El Hombre sin Cabeza. Este ambicioso corto fue seleccionado en el Festival de Cannes de 2003 y recibió de manos de Emir Kusturica el Premio del Jurado otorgado por unanimidad. Fue la única película francesa que ganó ese año. Es evidente el tremendo talento y cuidado que Solanas pone a la disposición del film, con unas imágenes más que trabajadas y una historia surrealista que habla sobre las identidades de las personas y el afán de buscar nuestra verdadera personalidad. Un buen trabajo que merece ser disfrutado.

Nonograms, also known as Paint by Numbers or Griddlers are picture logic puzzles in which cells in a grid have to be colored or left blank according to numbers given at the side of the grid to reveal a hidden picture. In this puzzle type, the numbers measure how many unbroken lines of filled-in squares there are in any given row or column. For example, a clue of "4 8 3" would mean there are sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, in that order, with at least one blank square between successive groups.

These puzzles are often black and white but can also have some colors. If they are colored, the number clues will also be colored in order to indicate the color of the squares. Two differently colored numbers may or may not have a space in between them. For example, a black four followed by a red two could mean four black spaces, some empty spaces, and two red spaces, or it could simply mean four black spaces followed immediately by two red ones.

amazingdroplets

The way to make an amazing droplet is simple. (Note: this is the original way I did it, but I'm sure others will emerge.)

1. Turn an image into an amazing circle.

2. You should now have a (pretty much) uniform colour as the background for the circle. Select the eyedropper tool, and select this background colour. Make sure that this is now set to your background colour in swatches. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP - without this, the droplet doesn't seem to come out correctly, and is distorted.

3. i. Zoom out to something like 8% (this is just to avoid a huge window of block colour in the next step).

3. ii. Go to Image > Canvas Size, and set the height and width to 300 percent. Set it to relative, and make it relative to the middle and bottom in the 3x3 grid.

4. You should now have an amazing circle sitting at the bottom of a fairly large canvas, with matching background. Now simply reapply the amazing circle technique.

5. You will now have an amazing droplet sitting in the center (ish) of the canvas. There may be some other stuff at the very bottom, but you can just ignore that. Crop the droplet as desired, and you're done.

Ο Ντγουάρ Εβ, χρησιμοποίησε με τελετουργικό τρόπο λίγο χρυσάφι για την τελική σύνδεση. Τα μάτια μιας ντουζίνας από βιντεοκάμερες τον παρατηρούσαν κι ο υποαιθέρας μοίραζε σε κάθε γωνιά του σύμπαντος, μια ντουζίνα εικόνες της πράξης του.

Τέντωσε την κορμοστασιά του, έγνεψε στον Ντγουάρ Ρέυν, κι ύστερα τακτοποιήθηκε βολικά δίπλα στο διακόπτη που θα έκανε την ιδανική επαφή, τη στιγμή ακριβώς που θα τον κατέβαζε. Το διακόπτη αυτόν που θα συνέδεε ταυτόχρονα όλους αυτούς τους κτηνώδεις κομπιούτερς, όλων των κατοικημένων πλανητών του σύμπαντος - εννενηνταέξι δισεκατομμύρια - σε ένα υπερκύκλωμα που με τη σειρά του θα τυπωνόταν σε ένα υπερυπολογιστή - αποθέωση μιας κυβερνητικής μηχανής που με την σειρά της θα συνδύαζε τις γνώσεις που υπήρχαν σε όλους τους γαλαξίες.

Ο Ντγουάρ Ρέυν προλόγισε για λίγο το κοσμοϊστορικό γεγονός απευθυνόμενος στα τρισεκατομμύρια των θεατών ή ακροατών. Ύστερα από σιγή ενός λεπτού, είπε: «Τώρα, Ντγουάρ Εβ».

Ο Ντγουάρ Εβ κατέβασε το διακόπτη. Ένας κατανυκτικός βόμβος ακολούθησε την αχαλίνωτη ορμή της δύναμης που ξέρασαν εννενηνταέξι δισεκατομμύρια πλανήτες. Φώτα αναβόσβησαν στην εκτεινόμενη ολόκληρα μίλια κονσόλα ελέγχου.

Ο Ντγουάρ Εβ έκανε καναδυο βήματα προς τα πίσω, και πήρε μια βαθιά ανάσα. «Η τιμή της επιλογής της πρώτης ερώτησης ανήκει σε 'σένα, Ντγουάρ Ρέυν».

«Ευχαριστώ», απάντησε απλά ο Ντγουάρ Ρέυν.
«Θα είναι μια ερώτηση που καμιά απλή κυβερνητική μηχανή δε στάθηκε ικανή να απαντήσει».

Γύρισε για να αντιμετωπίσει τη μηχανή. «Υπάρχει Θεός;»

Η κατανυκτική φωνή απάντησε χωρίς δισταγμό, χωρίς το παραμικρό κλικ έστω και ενός μοναδικού μεταλλάκτη.

«Ναι, τώρα υπάρχει Θεός».

Ξαφνικός φόβος φούντωσε στο πρόσωπο του Ντγουάρ Εβ. Τινάχτηκε για να αρπάξει τον διακόπτη.

Ένα αστροπελέκι από τον καθάριο ουρανό τον έριξε κάτω κι έκαψε την ασφάλεια του τροφοδότη βραχυκυκλώνοντας το κύκλωμα λειτουργίας.

Samorost 2 - Ατμοσφαιρικό flash game γρίφων

Καλοκαίρι επιτέλους. Και επιστροφή στην Αθήνα. Έχω πια κι εγώ γρήγορο Internet και πολύ χρόνο για πλοήγηση. Έτσι ανακάλυψα το Samorost 2, ένα ατμοσφαιρικό adventure game με πολύ καλά γραφικά, ενδιαφέροντες γρίφους και καλή μουσική επένδυση. Το site του Samorost 2 δίνει την δυνατότητα στον χρήστη να παίξει μόνο το πρώτο κεφάλαιο του παιχνιδιού online ενώ για τα υπόλοιπα πρέπει να πληρώσει για να τα παίξει. Υπάρχει και το Samorost 1 που έχει τα ίδια γραφικά και τους ίδιους περίεργους γρίφους. Αξίζει να το δοκιμάσετε.
